What you learn is what you teach yourself

Be better than before, than yesterday...

What you learn is what you teach yourself.   Sometimes the mentor have to take steps so that you will remember:

       1.  Giving you incomplete information so that you search for the missing pieces
       2.  Difficulties and challenges so that you are physically and  mentally challenged rather than
            being complacent
      3.  Charging you high mentoring teaching fees so that you pay attention and have a sense
           of engagement

Yesterday, this post went to SBU in the north.   The person manning the unit was particularly challenging because:   1.  she keeps on repeating the same mistakes,  2.  does not communicate through the well known channels;   DM,, Whats App, Gmail.   But she was a college graduate. A difficult nut to crack.

We had a general staff meeting at about 10 am, after a 6 hour trip, leaving at 4:00 am, a 200 km trip.
One of the staff was absent, it being she had a MD appointment.  This post also cancelled his meeting at 4 pm today.  As if only this post can deny himself, and cancel his appointment  Presumably, it was sabotage and insubordination but this post had no such solid evidence

The post promised to stay for a month at the sbu to correct the situation and has not given up until changes occur.  Otherwise the sbu would fall apart.  THIS POST EMPHASIZED:
      1.  2:00 o clock waking up to make the
      2.  4 am trip
      3.   to be at the sbu at 10 am

Also mentioned, that fellow professor are paid $1,000 a day (about P58,000) a day to mentor business person on business operation.  They pay nothing, and no one experiences or learn the kind of learning being disseminatted today

The post was happy that the aura of the one in charge was better and had better response on the teaching of the marketing plan.  I promised to help her and secure the help of third party prepare the marketing plan.

Today she was improving and teaching herself.   to learn.

...It is your fault if you die poor

It is about getting better...

"It is not your fault if you were born poor...It is your fault if you die poor.

Truly we can not choose the family and situation we are born into.  Destiny must have something to do with that (which is cruel)  But it is going to be unfortunate when the outside world, where the "destiny" gets the better of you

You have improve yourself:   your skills your mindset and leave behind your past.     As a former supervisor who later became the EVP (the number 2 man in the large pharma company) enjoined us in a a a birthday party, it is primary duty to you and your company to IMPROVE YOURSELF

You have to learn.  When you earn, you increase your earning.  The world is moving fast and if you do not improve you will be left behind. The world is one big classroom.  It is the =University of Life  You will become obsolete.  Artificial intelligence is a big threat to humanity.  It now here

No one no one can do that  except you1

What you have done lately to improve yourself?  What did you learn

More on learning to do experience: repairing a kitchen screen door closer

Image result for screen door

The household has been bothered by a kitchen screen door whose pneumatic stopper has ceased working because the the screws (2) were ripped off from the anchor of the alum door and the unit.   And the door lay idle for about several days and we could not use the door.   There were talks of buying a new door stopper and calling a repairman.

Today I got the chance to analyze the situation and appreciate the problem.  All I need to do was to get two tapping screws a millimeter or two that are oversized the ones that ripped off.  So I went to the usual hardware which closed early.  Then I happened to see a store that sell all types of nuts and bolts owned by certain Mike Cordero right next to the entrance of the Binangonan cockpit.   I got initially two for P2.00 but did not serve the purpose (too small) and later for P2.50 and that fitted (kabit2) Presto.  Problem solved for only P4.50 and some sweating under the noon sun

But problems can be solved if there is a passion to learn how to do it, and think hard how the problem can be solved.

Observe Learn Observe (OLO) even at an old age we must continue learning

I met the chairman of the largest memorial park group in the Philippines today.  They have 23 memorial park sites, 17 of which are operational (others are pending or have difficulties) and I remarked that no matter how many businesses or project you have completed, you will have problems and you must struggle with each of them, learning new things along the way.

He disdained people who have shallow understanding of their work and their business.  He said he met many people who claimed to be experts in the field but really have shallow understanding of the business.

When I mentioned the feature of the business, he remarked that old as he is (79 years old vs  my 65) he learns from me. and to which I said the same thing here.   We should be open to learn from each other from competitors and all people we meet.  To do otherwise is hubris and then we start growing old.l

He will never grow old, and the Lord will bless us with longer life because we help so many people have jobs and leave poverty behind, improve the bereavement industry and improve the way, people immortalize the memories of their loved ones.

Which reminded me of an entrepreneur from our place who despite his limited education established a hazardous waste disposal business, a resort, a restaurant, a scrap and recycling business from automobile factories.  He said that one of the key skills and abilities he has is his ability to learn quickly

There are many young graduates and trainees we have who do not and probably can not learn fast

Leading productive and winning meetings

It is about getting better...

From Great Leadership

According to Andrew Grove, former CEO of Intel, meetings is a powerful highly leveraged tool used by a manager to improve productivity.  Why is this so?   You have a single set up -  in one meeting you are able to get across so many people on one occasion and you can collaborate/cooperate because everybody who makes the decision could be there.  That is the time for candor and action:   no stalling, no second guessing.  You can observe the body language and the behavior of the the protagonist in full splendor.  Thus in  a meeting, you can communicate, ask for action, learn from the subordinate (this is important under utilized value of a meeting)

Meetings could be unproductive too, and ruin morale if:

1.  You are late;

2.  Take up too many things,

3.  Manage individual performance

4.  Share things that are in the email;

5.  No agenda.

The best and worst in Henry Ford

Repost from Leadershipnow | July 30, 2013

What are the best and worst in Henry Ford?

He would have been 150 years old;  he was born 3 weeks after the battle of Gettysburg.  It sad to note that the city that grew from the business he founded, Detroit, went belly up.

His positive trait:  he was tenacious and stubborn and this accounted for his early success.  He was talented. He believed in his own talent.

However, his belief in himself was delusional;  he lost objective sense of self.  He attracted great talent but also drove them away.  He was insensintive.

He believe in lifelong learning;  life is a never ending education;  anyone who stops learning is old

People learn from what they teach themselves

People may be wondering why I there are special reports and so many group work/reports.  The idea is for the student to make the research, analyze digest the data, learn the subject material and teach/report to others.

At least, there is something he/she has mastered to report to others.

It is because, the truth is people learn what they want to learn.

My lectures will not make them learn, or even my blog/website on line resources.  People will select what they want to learn, and learn only what they want to learn.  That is why a preference is requested when schedule for special report is being scheduled.
