Happy new year.  New year.  New resolution

Duterte will not change character from Rappler

"Do not hope I'll change my character. I am I and you are you. If we meet in one corner and we understand each other... if not, eh 'di pasensiya, talagang magmumura ako maski sino (I'm sorry, I will really curse at anyone whoever he is)," he said on Tuesday, September 27, in a press conference at a shabu laboratory discovered by the police in Arayat.

But despite the obstacles and problems and heat generated by his tough talk, Pres Duterte in many year end one on one interview with news hens (Jessica Soho) etc  promised he will use the God given gifts to him as they are and not change.

I think we have to accept obstinacy and a fixed mind set for senior citizens like Pres Duterte and that is given.  We cant teach old dogs new tricks.  However this is contrary to principles of leadership even Ignatian leadership, ie to be flexible and adaptive.  We know that even in the military, a business engaged in defending and protecting the nation by killing, love is a formula and flexibility in the chain of command, rather than blind uncompromising military discipline has not been the norm.

Duterte is now seen as a joker or even as a poet (pwet)

1. His men will have to decipher whether he is joking or is serious

2.  Or that he merely wants to silence his criitc

3.  Or that he wants to engage in double talk

His spokesman, not just one would not know how to paraphrase him (even if he was a student of National Artist Dr. Bien Lumbera in poetry

These acts affect his credibility and many including myself  lowered my confidence and trust in what ever he is saying as person, and even more so as a President

Image result for installing a bathroom hot and cold mixer faucet

Hello 2017 welcome.  You are but how many hours away.  How fast time flies.

Last December 27, the faucet in the bath tub failed at 2:30 am and nearly flooded the bath tub and the bath room  I had to close the valve cutting off the water supply in the house.   My whole day, the following day was consumed by finding the right faucet, and installing it.  For the canvass, there was one at DIY at P2,400.  It looked like the perfect fit.  The sales clerk suggested that I try the Ace Hardware whom she heard carried much more economical stocks.  I went to SM Angono and found one at P2,099.  Sayang din ang P300.  However I noted that the sales clerk warned about the s adjusting connector.

And there you are when I was trying to install, the male and female coupling would not fit.  The fixed  connector at the wall was wider (off) by say 2 mm both sides.  So I had to find a way to make the adjustable s connector at the wall move.  I did not have tool (so it seemed for that).  I called help and he was able to find ways to move the wall connector.  And there, I was able, with a little help from a friend re install the bath room faucet.

At the age of 65, I should not be doing this, just calling a plumber to do the job.  But here I was, doing my best to do it myself.  A real learning to do process.

Find out about my bike year end cleaning too (DIY too)

Its all about personal mastery - the drive to establish new business is about yourself

It is about getting better...

Rizal Philippines
December 23, 2016.

I recalled a story about JG (John Gokongwei) who said that the struggle to put up and continue the business is not about making more money and being more successful  I can now fully comprehend what he meant.  It is about you and personal mastery.

As you grow older, you become older, you become more sensitive and you become more keenly aware of the detractor and restraining force.  Must you give up and stop?

Is it worth the trouble if your detractors are your family members, trusted employees,  your business partner.  Must you give up if they are swinging on the side of the wrong.

Must you stop pursuing your dreams.?

Selfishness is the root of all evil and transgression of the laws of God

It is about getting better...

Rizal Philippines
November 20, 2016

From Shawne Thomas

From a Bible Devotion

A preacher seemed to have oversimplified sin and salvation by saying that the root of all sins is selfishness.  Say the 7 deadly sins of glutton avarice, greed, jealousy, all stem from love of one self and /or over emphasis on ones desires.  And also the ten Commandments of God - thus thou shalt not steal covet thy neighbors wife etc are all directed against man;s  relentless desire for self gratification and satisfaction of ones desire.

The Lord Jesus Christ has been more positive and simple by enjoining us to love one another as we love our self.   That is depriving ourselves or equaling our love of ourselves and others.  Do you agree?

Before we specify the age of staff who can be hired.    This will be considered illegal when a new law will be passed. I recently recruited a GSM who is a former head of a competitor and he wanted a high salary.  I could afford to pay only 75%  However he reported only 50% of the time.  Although I required him to submit a weekly plan he did not.   We agreed on a target but I could not see much passion and effort going into his position.  Results were pitiful and thus I could see end of his career with us  It was good he gave up to spare us the pain of firing him

To top it all, he requested for huge resources but did not submit accountability reports.   His outputs were measly and pitiful:  in terms of recruits, sales training and even presentation   Although I gave him loads of materials to review and understand, he did not seem to understand this.  When I inquired from the people if they understood or were motivated, it was in the negative.

Above all, as I read his text messages on certain issues, he looked like a loser, spewing out alibis and things that he could not control or irrelevant to him

Sorry to meet such kind of people at his level, and wasting our time and resources

While he claim being a trainer, he lacked a lot of self development and self mastery

Getting over infection of the eye and severe head aches

It is about getting better...

Rizal Philippines
November 19, 2016

I have been sidelined for almost a month by a viral infection that rendered me disabled because I had loss of vision (I had double vision) and loss of faculty to think because of severe head ache.  I had viral infection that affected th nerves going to the eyes.  And it was very painful.  The most potent analgesic could not get rid of the pain.  I took a drug that enabled me to sleep at once but the pain is back as soon as I woke up.  Thus I could not bike, nor work, nor blog.

It is great now that the disease took its natural course;  the eye defect is gone although the pain around the eye and face is not gone.

While I was sick, I exercised, did the stationary bike, tried to read whenever I can and kept myself in general physically fit.   And I am often reminded that events like this humbles you and you focus on the things that you can do, and you pray a lot.  The loss of these faculties which are source of my pride means that I am disabled and probably as good as being dead.  But I did my best to get myself back to the harness by exercise, taking all the medicine, following the doctors advice, etc. I did brisk walking am and pm and did my best to lead a normal life (which was not)  I tried to socialize although people would notice some of the signs of the disease

I learned my lesson that you have to savor life as it is and do the best you can while you still can

And now, before Christmas, I will probably be well.

Case of revisionism, regular outcome of family squabbles over wealth

It is about getting better...

Rizal Philippines
November 1, 2016

Yesterday, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw this memorial that honored my parents as founder of all the businesses that I worked hard to organize, start thrive and become progressive. They were supposed to put the companies even when:   my father all ready died (in 1985) and our mother was sick with diabetes.

They say, when there is no money there is a problem, even more so when there is so much money.

I struggled hard to put the family on top of the heap by organizing businesses that ranged from real estate development, finance, commercial complex, water system funeral service, crematorium  We had branches of memorial parks in 11 locations.

My mistake was following strictly the wishes of my mother who ordered that we split the company 20% for 5 children.  Not knowing that Sec. 28 of corporation code can effectively block me out, (Only 3 votes can kick me out under the said provision )without any reason.  I am out of the board and not getting my share of the profits, even for the crematorium which was entirely built from my equity. I should not been that obedient nor generous.   But taking away credits for achievement.... that is something else

That is a case of historical revisionism;   the truth will come out;  and vengeance belongs to the Lord.

.... And one last thing - admonition from Steve Jobs to view life differently

It is about getting better...

Rizal Philippines
October 31, 2016

Tomorrow is All Souls day.  As we honor the dead tomorrow, we are reminded how we should live.

Several years ago, I interviewed a scholar whom we sent to a state U on what he would be doing afterwards.  He said, he would raise a family, go to church on Sunday and pay his taxes (no need his company accountant would have done this for him) I was utterly disappointed and devastated after spending 6 figures on his free education.   All the while I thought that he had leadership, and that he would pay his good fortune forward, ie help other people reap the same benefits as he did.

Steve Jobs said he must view life differently.  Avoid being smug  Make a dent in the Universe.

I would facilitate a corporate planning for a family owned food company two weeks from now.  My biggest apprehension is that for the sake of family unity, the top management would not rock the boat nor go against the wishes of the President (the parents)  Or the level of risk taking would be limited.  I learned that the VP before shot down two new products.  The result of this corporate planning can be worthless too.  Steve Jobs was known to have high level of risk taking That is why he failed several times too!

One of the worlds best prosthetic maker, believes in patience and being client focussed

It is about getting better...

Rizal Philippines
October 16, 2016

Another one from NHK.

NHK today featured one of the best prosthetic maker in Japan,  Fumio Usui

His goal has been three fold with those whom he makes prosthesis for:   1.  to walk 2.  for comfort
and 3 to make them look good.   Number 1 is easy but 2 and 3 had been formidable tasks

So for making the patient feel comfortable, it has been agonizing;  sometimes he feels like giving up but that is not possible for him to give up on his word.  So he has to be patient and try and try again until he gets it right again  For a certain client Watanabe, he could get the prosthesis right and says he is only there 65%.  She also wants to walk with high heels.

He is 61 and has made 400 prosthesis for Japanese who have lost their legs.  For him it is a passion.  when he goes home he looks at how people walk, and wonders how he can make other people walk,

Athletes who want to compete in paralympics seek his help.  He is considered the best in Japan and the world because  of his his passion and work ethic

Learning on self development from Russian synchronized swimming champions

It is about getting better...

Video of Russian synchronized swimming champions

From NBC on Olympics
The duo of Russian synchronized swimmers Natalia Ischenko and Svetlana Romashina won the synchronized swimming competition for the fifth straight time and would be considered iconic in their event.

They were featured at NHK and there were series of tests and studies that analyzed their performance. They were compared with their counterpart Spanish competitors:

1.  They were perfect almost 100% as to angle and down to the water splash.  The angle of the feet and even the curl of the toes.  The synchronization was 100% perfect -  each was a perfect carbon copy of the o ther.

2.  The Russian athletes, compared to the Spanish counterparts, can do harder and faster leg movements, stay underwater for that routine, 20 seconds longer than the Spaniards and they occurred at the latter part of the routine, when the athletes were tired and fatigued.  How come?

When one dives, the heart rate drops and this is called diving reflex. The body conserves oxygen to survive.  So the usual trend is to have lower heart rate, lower oxygen delivery to the thighs that is responsible for rapid thigh and leg movement.  But the Russians defied this science and human physiology.

They had higher heart rate when underwater, whereas the heart rate of the Spaniards, followed the usual pattern of diving reflex.  It was found out that among water mammals, the spleen delivered extra oxygen to the blood stream by contracting.  It is a sort of diving tank.  For most people, the spleen contracts by 5 to 10%

Their spleen contracted and released more blood into the heart by as much as 2x and 5x compared to other humans.

What could be  the reason for this:

1. They train much longer than anyone else since they were 5 years old:

2.  Their daily routine consist of 5 hours in the pool with the following routine:

      500 hours swim

standing reverse vertically for indeterminate amount of time

3.  They never leave the pool for the break or when eating

4. They practice even when they have all ready won gold medals.  They never lost their humility and ability to endure

They practice synch in and out of water, they count.   The leader, Ischenko, synchs and follows intently Natalia.  Of the two Ischenko is more positive and she has this to say (she was chosen to be part of the team because of her beautiful arms)

Short biography of Natalia Ischenko

The other reason is motivation.   Ischenko had more high points in her life as analyzed by sports psychologists and even sees the low points in her life as opportunities.  Thus her brain works harder than her partner as they perform the routine and enables her to do harder work and exceed her physical limits

      1.  Be willing to change and accept suggestion even if you are correct

      2.  Never give up

      3.  Aim for the top

      4.  Improve

5,  Push yourself to the limit and when you have problems, the answer is not outside.  You can find it within you

In a religious forum, the leader was asked about the importance of the scriptures to the faithful.

This what the preacher/the leader said:

1.  Your genes and chromosomes is the evidence of your link to your parents and relatives;

2.  The scripture and the teachings that you share make you share stay connected with the religious group that you belong.  Without the Scripture, you cant believe on the same thing and be one.

In the company, we can stay close and unified by the vision mission, objectives, and  the policies of the organization.

Hence the importance of shared learning

Must you take personal revenge against those who have wronged you?

It is about getting better...

Rizal Philippines
August 28, 2016

I watched a TV show on Bible exposition and the preacher was asked if it is OK to take revenge, as a Christina against those who killed his wife.  The preacher said we should leave it to the Lord to take vengeance against the sinners (especially those who violated the 10 commandments)

Says Romans 12:19

18If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone. 19Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written:“Vengeance is Mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”20On the contrary, “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink. For in so doing, you will heap burning coals on his head.”

Leave it to the Lord.  Thus in my 33 years of business experience, I have avoided litigation and avoid harboring grudges vs enemies, those who malign me, or steal our resources.  And indeed the passage is true.  Employees who steal from us suffer misfortunes:  parents and relatives die, they die.  But on the other hand we re still alive.

After vengeance from the Lord comes hell.  Do you believe there is hell?…

There is hell.   Those who sin and have not repeneted will go to hell.  Various bible verses say there is hell.

Revelation 14: 10 - 11

He also will drink the wine of God's wrath, poured full strength into the cup of his anger, and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.”

Revelation 20:4

Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

Mark 9:47
And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell,

Your enemies, your trials and your difficulties are your greatest teacher

It is about getting better...

Rizal Philippines
August 27, 2016

We  fear and avoid our enemies and we disdain our difficulties and trials.  Because we tend to look at them as as destructive in our life, nor worth our time.

In the movie Enders Game, the great Guru told Ender that one must not let guard if you are near the enemy.  You learn the greatest if you are dealing with the enemy.   Your challenges in life teach you to be better and stronger person.

As they say in text messages sent to us before, God give us challenges to test our mettle and character

God knows best and does not give us the things we want.  He gives us something else.  When we ask for wealth, he gives us poverty so that we know how to look for wealth.  When we ask for knowledge, he gives us events for us to learn and so on.

Let us have more positive outlook towards our problems our difficulties and enemies.

ENTREP Francis Butiong NU12 # 3

Sir,

Just in case you weren't able to receive the complete set I sent last Sunday.

Thanks,
Pope Francis Butiong

Francis Matt Antonio Butiong
Prof. Jorge Saguinsin
ENTREP
NU12 # 3
Background
Filipinos are heavy drinkers. We are also party goers. People get drunk and have fun. The reason why we drink is because we like the feeling of being inebriated. And getting drunk with your friends adds to that great feeling. And getting drunk with your friends in a bar is just really fun. But there are times when people get into accidents because of DUI. How can you drive home safe without sobering up and getting rid of that fun feeling?
Solution
A pill that suppresses the alcohol in your blood and makes you sober for a certain time just so you can drive home safe. Then after the effects have gone, the alcohol goes back and you start feeling drunk again. You can go back to enjoying the inebriation and fall asleep.

Death is one of the greatest invention of God and life; the old is replaced by new

It is about getting better...

was watching Focus of Bro Ely Soriano at UNTV and he answered a question from Canada.  Her friend who was 27 died of brain cancer. She asked why God allows that.

The answer of Bro. Ely were as follows:

Death can be sad, ugly and violent.  We find it difficult to accept and face death.  If we cant deal with death, we sometimes become neurotic or even psychotic.  We have to face the reality of death.

1.  DEATH IS SOMETHING THAT WE CAN NOT AVOID.

From Hebrew 9:27  "And it was appointed unto men once to die,  but after this judgment."  Man is destined to die, and we can't avoid this.  All living things including men will die. And after this we shall be judged.

2.   Man can not overcome the power of God

Ecclesiastes 8:8  " There is no men that hath power  over spirit that hath power over spirit; neither hath he power in the day of the death."

We have to accept the inevitability of death.  Death according to  Steve Jobs in his speech at Stanford,  is one of the invention of God and the Universe.  The old dies and is replaced by new.  Death gives way to new life

3.  We should accept death, judgement and promise of everlasting life.
1 John 2:25.  "And that is the promise that he hath promised us ever, eternal life"

We fear not death even if it is inevitable for there will be everlasting life after judgement.  Death may be painful and ugly for many of us. But in view of the above readings in the scriptures, never should we fear or abhor death.  We see death in a better light.  And because we know it, the more we should accept and prepare for this as we welcome memorial products and services

Why Personal Mastery is important to get promoted?

It is about getting better...

Rizal Philippines
August 17, 2019.

I recently congratulated a former staff who was recently appointed as Dean of a University System in our province.  I asked him about his secret in his promotion.

He said that the current Dean pissed off the President of the University because of his bad work habits.  The new Dean said that he was never absent nor late in his about 5 years tenure as a professor in the University.  He came early and went home late (taking experience first) he never complained, took in a lot of assignments, and worked beyond office hours, and even on weekends and holidays, just as I had trained them while under my wings.

It was all about getting better.

At the end of the day, it was about attitude and personal mastery.
