Leadership and being a self starter, less or 0 follow up

It is about getting better...

I am very senior now and my expectation in business is that I am done after long years of mentorship, with follow up and getting fired up and kicking ass.  This post expect the junior, now turning to seniors to exercise and practice leadership

I expect my subordinates to:

1.  Make recommendations for sound judgement and have weighed options all ready for decision;
2.   At their initiatives, fdollow up their timelines and contractors, without need for me to do the follow up
3.   Me not repeating many times procedures that need to be followed.
4.   Having the discipline for clarity and goals.

That is not happening yet.... Many lack determination and discipline

Forcefulness needed in determination and leadership

It is about getting better...

Former boss at Pepsi Enrico defined leadership as taking a point of view and expressing this forcefully.   Most of us think of goal setting as wishful thinking/hoping.  Nothing of that sorts happen.  Force and extreme emotion is needed.

How many times, have we found out that we almost made this, but we did not try hard enough.
\
That is why hard work, hard work, hard work is needed to succeed.

Training and inspiring through others through KWENTO (stories)

It is about getting better...

Rizal Philippines
September 10, 2017

The Kong  story on training reminds me of the importance of story telling. I won at MM many eons ago in the CMLI story telling contest besting other candidates from vaunted exclusive schools and public schools thanks to my very strict coach and English teacher (head of the English dept, she gave me a grade of 85 though in her subject despite this achievement  - that is another story though)

I overlooked the importance of story telling despite two important advice:

1. From Fr.   Ben  the former Pres of Ateneo, (is much better than the younger and supposed to be much more dynamic leader that leadership training is about making kuwento and that the younger generation learns of the values and strategies from the kuwento relayed  from generation to generation

2.  The public speaking course of Cale Carnegie from ETIOP which  I also took eons of years ago emphasized that speeches should be stories or kuwento peppered with human  interest (that appeals or suits your intended audience) rather than pompous ideologies or theories.

3.  We were advised on sales presentation as former detailman of a local pharma that isnow  multi billion multi national, to have jokes (even green ones) to capture the  attention of your prospect.

And so yesterday, in a sales meeting in Calapan in one of our SBUS which was attended by some former and new seller, I had many kuwento for the welcome remarks and the Q and A portion.   I think we captured the interest and imagination of many by that approach

And so we remember the kuwentos of our lives.  MMK

Duterte will not change his character despite criticisms and problem his diatribe create

It is about getting better...

Rizal Philippines

Happy new year.  New year.  New resolution

Duterte will not change character from Rappler

"Do not hope I'll change my character. I am I and you are you. If we meet in one corner and we understand each other... if not, eh 'di pasensiya, talagang magmumura ako maski sino (I'm sorry, I will really curse at anyone whoever he is)," he said on Tuesday, September 27, in a press conference at a shabu laboratory discovered by the police in Arayat.

But despite the obstacles and problems and heat generated by his tough talk, Pres Duterte in many year end one on one interview with news hens (Jessica Soho) etc  promised he will use the God given gifts to him as they are and not change.

I think we have to accept obstinacy and a fixed mind set for senior citizens like Pres Duterte and that is given.  We cant teach old dogs new tricks.  However this is contrary to principles of leadership even Ignatian leadership, ie to be flexible and adaptive.  We know that even in the military, a business engaged in defending and protecting the nation by killing, love is a formula and flexibility in the chain of command, rather than blind uncompromising military discipline has not been the norm.

Duterte is now seen as a joker or even as a poet (pwet)

1. His men will have to decipher whether he is joking or is serious

2.  Or that he merely wants to silence his criitc

3.  Or that he wants to engage in double talk

His spokesman, not just one would not know how to paraphrase him (even if he was a student of National Artist Dr. Bien Lumbera in poetry

These acts affect his credibility and many including myself  lowered my confidence and trust in what ever he is saying as person, and even more so as a President

How do get recognized as a leader?

Is it just ok to do your job, and that is it, eventually you will be recognized as a leader and be promoted?

False.  You must be recognized.

But isnt just tooting your horn,  or just like being a black bird  (a crow, always announcing its name?)

How do you develop leadership? By building relationship

From Lead Change group  by Joshua Uebergang   |  February 27, 2014

Leadership is about capturing the minds and hearts of followers/associates? It is not what people when you are there.  It about making the things that are to be done when you are not there

How do you do it?

1.  Go down to the experiential level

2.  Search for the emotion

3.  Relate to this

Change take place when you make the people feel good about themselves.

What are some of the habits that you can eliminate to be a better leader?

Repost from Smartblog | by Young Entrepreneur Council | July 24, 2013

Some habits can really hold you back from a becoming a leader.

What are some of them?

l.  Use of cellphone.  It can be distraction.   Once you eliminate texting, or games, you can do more productive things.

2.  Micromanaging;

3.  Being a perfectionist;

4,  Crowdsourcing a decision (consulting everyone;  one employee who was ordered to be on duty on a Sunday because of marketing work said she needs to be consulted?)

5.  Being shy;

6.  Doing smaller task

7.  Watching tv; read more >>>

10 of the worst auto-industry execs of all time
The auto industry has given rise to heroes such as Fiat-Chrysler's Sergio Marchionne and Ford's Alan Mulally, but also to a significant number of bad CEOs, writes Alex Taylor III. Henry Ford might have been a great innovator, but he was a lousy manager; John Z. DeLorean's iconic gull-wing autos were undermined by claims that the CEO was moonlighting as a drug smuggler; and Chrysler CEO Bob Eaton drove his company into a disastrous merger with Daimler, eventually leaving it virtually worthless. Retailers get database help to weed out workers who steal
U.S. retailers are using national databases such as First Advantage Corporation's Esteem to weed out workers and applicants who have been accused of stealing. Critics say the databases are often short on details and often don't involve criminal charges, while retailers say the information is a useful tool in combating employee theft, which cost merchants an estimated $15 billion in 2011, according to NRF. How to clamp down on happy clams
Many of your worst workers are probably as happy as clams -- in part because, like clams, they're doing little other than keeping their heads down and hoping nobody notices them. Collecting and disposing of such slackers is essential, writes Roberta Matuson, in part because eliminating the slackers allows you to ensure harder workers get the attention, resources and support they need. Innovation and Creativity

How to make the most of your creative employees
Creative types aren't always the easiest people to work with, but they are essential for building a successful company, Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic writes. You can help your creative employees reach their potential by allowing them to experiment, giving them meaningful assignments and providing the flexibility they crave. "[W]e are all more likely to perform more creatively in spontaneous, unpredictable circumstances -- because we cannot rely on our habits," he writes. When do people have their best ideas? When they least expect to
Recent studies suggest that the best way to have a breakthrough is to step back and allow your mind to wander a little. Innovators suggest thinking about your problem at a time you'd normally be doing other things and making time to think about anything but work. "You have to be able to float through your environment with your antennae up, like a butterfly, and just let things ping your antennae," says entrepreneur Sterling Lanier. The Global Perspective

German firms struggle with Russian corruption
German companies are eager to invest in Russia, but they're finding its political and corporate corruption hard to take. Getting projects up and running often means requests for "a small contribution" to local officials, their wives and even neighborhood fire departments. "You just have to be firm and stand your ground, and such requests will decline," says Hans-Jörg Grundmann, Siemens' anti-corruption officer. Spiegel Online (Germany) (4/3)

Engage. Innovate. Discuss.

4 ways to say "no" more effectively
Leaders shouldn't try to solve every problem themselves, writes Mary Jo Asmus, and taking a step back and refusing to take on extra responsibilities is sometimes the only way to do your job effectively. "Saying 'no' is an option you need to exercise regularly in order to focus on what's most important. The feeling of freedom you get from it can be powerful," Asmus writes.
