Entrepreneurship S10
Factors Paper
I came from a family of medical science. My dad and oldest brother are doctors, my mom is a nurse, my eldest sister is into genetic research. Only my second brother and I took business courses. We put up a catering services business last 2006 which is being managed by my brother and his wife. They are now doing quite well in the industry.
I searched the internet what makes a successful entrepreneur and here is what I got.
15 Entrepreneurial Success Factors
The most critical and most important factors that can make an entrepreneur to become a successful are:
1.       Willingness to take action. This is the first and most important factor for each potential and current entrepreneur. All other factors presented below, won't have importance if he or she didn't take a real action.
2.       Knowledge. They must have superior knowledge about business issues for business that they start.
3.       Creativity. They must have creativity to be unique and continuously improves business.
4.       Skills. Each entrepreneur and each business need different entrepreneurial skills that in some cases can be crucial for business success.
5.       Intelligence. They must be intelligent to manage all possible situations and to solve the hardest problems that will be a constant in business life.
6.       Patience. They must be patient and to continue after losing the first battle, because the war is not finished. It's only the beginning.
7.       Persistence. Persistence simply is a refusal to give up from something, or ability to keep your actions against your personal feelings that you're not ready for such actions. Feelings and motivation didn't produce results, but the action is something that will produce it.
8.       Teamwork. Nobody can achieve anything alone so this is true also for an entrepreneur because they're not a "Superman". They must be team players for their and business success.
9.       Calculated risk. This is truly one of the most important questions: did they take the risk? Yes, each business startup is in some level risky. However, more important is how a successful entrepreneur takes a risk? The word calculated risk is the most appropriate word for this feature.
10.   Self-Confidence. Self-confidence is a really important and key factor. I think that nobody would be an entrepreneur if don't have self-confidence that he knows how to start and manage their own business.
11.   Experience. Sometimes experience is in category not must have as a factor, but it is something that will increase business potential energy. They must employ all present and previous experience they had into the business.
12.   Talent. Talent is something inborn in an entrepreneur. Sometimes talent can be replaced with knowledge.
13.   Honesty. Honesty is important in every case, but sometimes honesty, being real can be the biggest enemy of an entrepreneur in some complex conditions.
14.   Connections. More connection the more possibilities for building a successful business.
15.   Luck. Luck is a psychological factor. Some people can say that they don't have a luck. And indeed there are some "lucky people" who just accidentally found the right place at the right time. However, it is a small percentage and cannot be included as a serious factor for success.
I believe that I have most of these characteristics. The only thing I lack is self-confidence. Knowledge, skills, talent and experience (about the business industry) can be gained through time but I believe self-confidence is something that should be inborn for an entrepreneur. My mom always said I'm "mahina ang loob". I think this is because I am overly cautious. I don't like making decision based on what if's. I make decisions only after I have enough information about something. Also, I am quite timid. Introvert as my sister calls me. I'd rather stay in room and read rather than go to the mall. And also, maybe because I don't want to get out of my comfort zone. I would really like to have my own someday but I just can't up the steady pay that I get from being an employee. Also if I put up a business, it would be something I love to do because I like doing things on my own and I want hand-on when I run my business, not just supervising. I wouldn't last doing something I do not love.
I have a few businesses in mind that I'd like to put up but I'm not sure how to start or where to start. I want to put up a bookstore/boutique/coffee shop-in-one but I don't know where to get the capital. Bookstore, because I love to read and boutique, because I love stylish clothes. The coffee shop is just an add-on so that the customer can relax while they shop. Putting up a retail business can be quite expensive if you do not have the right connections/network and I'm not quite ready to risk on investing so much on this one. I'm thinking of maybe starting online first before putting up the actual store with coffee shop where customers can relax. This is a big venture for me but this is really one of my dream businesses.
Another business I have in mind is invitation maker, one who designs and creates invitations for events like weddings, birthdays, etc. I designed and created my own invitation for my debut and I quite love doing it. Also I created wedding invitation for my cousin's wedding because they loved the invitation I made for my debut. I have already connections for this business because of our catering services. I also don't need a big capital for this one just a printer and stationary paper for simple designs.
And most of all, I like this business because I can do this after office hours. I don't have to give up having the steady pay of an employee.
I am planning to start this business soon. I have a friend who is going to get married this December and I offered to create her wedding invitation. This is only a dry run to see how things will go if I put it up. I have to know if it's going to affect my current job, or if I won't have any problem in financing a project and most of all, if I am still going to enjoy doing it like I did before. I really have high hopes for this one and I'm quite excited to get started.
