The idea behind self development, self mastery, is Emotional Intelligence (by Daniel Goleman) is the ability to control and motivate oneself and ability to control others.

It deals with extreme emotion like guilt, panic, remorse, depression.  The events and the cause leading to the suicide will remain unanswered.  The dead carried their secrets with them.

Bad experience is supposed to temper oneself and make the subject stronger, tougher, if not more resilient.
